How to Get Rid of Cankles After Pregnancy

If you’ve recently given birth, you may be wondering how to get rid of cankles following your pregnancy. Swelling, or edema, is common when you’re pregnant, especially in the ankles. However, many women are unaware that it can persist after delivery, too. Postpartum swelling can occur in the legs and ankles, leading to the dreaded “cankles” situation. If you’re wondering how you can eradicate the problem, here is some advice.

Why Am I So Swollen After Pregnancy?

When you’re pregnant, your body makes around 50 percent more fluids and blood than usual. This is so it can meet your growing baby’s needs. This additional fluid helps to soften the body. This allows it to accommodate the baby better as it grows and develops in your womb. It will also prepare your tissues and joints around the pelvis to stretch during delivery. Around 25 percent of the body weight you gain in pregnancy comes from extra fluids. When you push during labor, you often force extra fluids to your extremities. Meanwhile, if you had a cesarean delivery, the IV fluids you received can contribute to swelling. Fortunately, for most women, you can relieve the swelling in the ankle area by following this advice:

Don’t Stand for Long Periods

It’s best to rest as much as possible to avoid swelling of the ankles and calves. If you need to be on your feet, take regular breaks and keep your feet elevated. This will improve your circulation. Also, remember never to cross your legs when sitting as it restricts your blood flow.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Don’t wear shoes that constrict the feet. Whenever possible, choose flats and opt for clothing with a loose fit around your legs and ankles.

Stay Hydrated

Although it seems counterintuitive, drinking a lot of fluid helps to relieve water retention. Stay well-hydrated, especially if the weather is warm.

Avoid Eating Processed Food

A lot of processed foods contain a high amount of sodium. This aggravates postpartum swelling. Eat a balanced, healthy diet instead. Opt for lean protein sources and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. Avoid adding extra salt and sugar to your food, too.

Stay Cool

If the weather is warm, try to stay indoors as much as possible and, when outdoors, sit in shady spots. You may find swimming in cool water reduces your swelling, too.

Use A Cold Compress

If your ankles and calves are very swollen, apply a cold compress. This will help to relieve the swelling.

Exercise

Light exercise, such as a gentle stroll, will encourage better blood circulation. This will also help to relieve swelling in the lower legs.

Do I Need Surgery?

If your cankles have not reduced several months after your delivery, you may need to take further action. If there is no medical cause for your swollen legs, it could simply be weight gain from your pregnancy. If it fails to move with diet and exercise, liposuction could help. By permanently removing the excess fat, it can resolve the problem of how to get rid of cankles.
